1. Cooking on the Himalayan Salt Rock
Use Himalayan salt for cooking! There are several different recipes that involve using the rock for the actual cooking process rather than in the recipe itself. You do this by cooking on the Himalayan salt rock.
Tempering
The first thing that you will need to do is slowly heat the rock. This is a process called tempering. You do this by placing the rock in the oven on the lowest rack with the oven on the lowest setting.
Gradually increase the temperature by 50 degrees every 30 minutes until the rock reaches a temperature of over 500 degrees. It’s normal for the block of salt to make cracking noises and crack throughout it. You want to turn off the oven and let the block of salt sit with the door shut until it reaches room temperature.
Heating for Use
After it is tempered, you can heat it up when ready to use. Use a gas burner or have a metal ring to allow air flow when using an electric stove. Set the heat to low and allow it to heat for 15-20 minutes.
Then increase the temperature to medium and heat for another 15-20 minutes. Then repeat with the temperature on high. It will need to reach 500 degrees.
Test this by splashing a few drops of water onto the rock. If it’s the right temperature, the water will fizzle and evaporate very quickly. You can even use it for grilling!
When cooking foods on the rock, be sure to choose foods that generally don’t take a long time to cook. It’s great for seafood, meat, and veggies! And once you heat up your block, you can use it to cook foods for several hours!
